Shir Zad Sarbaz
Shir Zad Sarbaz is the founder of The Afghan Humanitarian Aid, a nonprofit organization focused on supporting vulnerable people in Afghanistan. A former Afghan Army Captain and Diplomatic Liaison Officer, Shir Zad has dedicated his life to service — from military leadership and international cooperation to humanitarian relief and refugee support.
He received advanced military training at India’s prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA), where he also earned a Bachelor’s in Political Science and Economics. Known for his leadership and dedication, Shir Zad received multiple awards, medals, and certificates during his training. He later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Military Studies and Defense Management.
Upon returning to Afghanistan, he served at the Ministry of Defense to build diplomatic ties with 22 foreign embassies and secure international scholarships for the Afghan defense personnel. In 2021, following a major shift in the country’s political and security environment, he resettled in the United States.
Since then, Shir Zad has worked and volunteered with several nonprofit organizations supporting refugees. He traveled across the U.S. to local branches of these organizations, providing direct support to refugees. This included helping families access housing, public benefits, job readiness training, cultural orientation, and community integration.
These experiences — both lived and learned — led him to establish Afghan Humanitarian Aid, driven by a mission to address the urgent hunger crisis in Afghanistan, focusing on starving families, widows, and orphans. Providing relief to those forcibly returned from neighboring countries remains a key priority, but the fight against hunger stands at the heart of the mission. Although the organization is currently centered on Afghanistan, his vision reaches far beyond —
aiming to serve vulnerable communities across the globe.
“I believe in a world without borders,” he says. “I believe in a world where no child goes hungry,
no mother suffers alone, and no father is forced to choose between feeding his family and
keeping them safe. We may be starting small — but we are guided by love, dignity, and the
belief that humanity comes first.”
